Local Recipes

Beloved dishes in Naxos are the pastitsio with pumpkin, the potatoes “pentarates”, the “rosto” (meat in red sauce), the “omelette with karfa” and the kakavia fish soup. Famous specialties of the island are, the “giachnada” with summer vegetables, the “sefouklote” pies with a variety of greens but also the Easter lamb with its tasty filling.
Filled Mbourekia


For the filling:
2 kilos almonds
1 kilo walnuts
1 cup of honey
1/2 kilo sesame
2 glasses of sugar
Clover and cinnamon
Sugar (for sprinkling)

For the leaf:
1 kilo flour
1 spoonful of olive oil
1 egg
2 oranges

We put honey,sugar and a little water in a saucepan. We put it upon fire in order to make a mix.By lowering the saucepan we add the remainder of the materials, which should be crushed.  We mix and our filling is ready.
We prepare the dough, after we mix and knead all materials, open it in leaves that we cut in round pieces. We put in each piece, one spoonful of filling and we fold in any form we want, pressing it in the end with wet fingers.
We cook in a medium oven and when we remove it, we sprinkle with sugar.
