Description

Gyaros is found east of Kea and north-west of Syros, from which it abstains 9 naval miles. It has an extent of 17,2 t. km and its highest top is 489m. Glaronisi is found south-east of Gyaros.

The island was inhabited in antiquity, but is today uninhabited. In the roman and Byzantine years, it was used as a place of exile. After 1930, and mainly at the period of the dictatorship of Metaxas, it began to be used as a place of deportation of political detainees. At the period of the Civilian War it was used as prison. The buildings were built by the detainees, who, at this period exceeded 7.000. The prisons, which had been vacated in 1961, were once again used for the political detainees of the military dictatorship of 1967.
